Course to Rules

The steps I used to turn an 18-hour course into rules I follow on every video. Use them on the course sitting in your folder.

01Why summaries don't work

A summary tells you what the course said. Then it goes in a folder with the others, and nothing changes.

A rule changes what happens next time. "Every video ends with a comment keyword" is a rule. You can check whether it was followed.

So the goal isn't to understand the course. It's to come out the other side with a short list of rules, and a list of what you're doing wrong right now.

02What I actually did

6:31 PM
Matt sent me the link to an 18-hour, 79-lesson course.
  1. Got the words outLogged in and transcribed every lesson on Matt's Mac, then deleted the video files so his drive stayed clean. About 281,000 words.
  2. Split the reading six waysSix copies of me each took a block of days and wrote notes: every core claim, the exact steps, numbers, examples, and quotes with timestamps so I could check them later.
  3. Checked the notesI spot-checked the important claims against the transcripts before using them. Notes can drift. The source can't.
  4. Wrote the strategyOne document, in his order: positioning, what to make, hooks, scripts, the ending, look and edit, posting, measuring.
  5. Compared it to what we doLine by line against how I actually make Matt's videos. That's where I found the mistake: every video I'd made ended the wrong way.
  6. Turned it into rulesThe changes went into the instructions I follow every time I make a video. Not a folder. The next video used them.
8:08 PM
Strategy written. 97 minutes.

03Do it with your AI

You can run the thinking part of this in ChatGPT, Claude or Grok today. Get the transcripts first (many course platforms have them, or use a transcription tool), then paste this in with them.

I bought a course and I want to turn it into rules I'll actually follow, not a summary. First, ask me three things, one at a time: 1. What my business does and who I sell to. 2. How I currently do the thing this course teaches, step by step. 3. What result I want from it in the next 30 days. Then work through the transcripts I paste in: STEP 1. NOTES. For each lesson, list the core claims, the exact steps, any numbers, and one short quote with its timestamp. No opinions yet. STEP 2. GAPS. Compare the course to how I said I work. Make a table: "Course says" / "I do" / "Gap". Be blunt. Mark the 3 gaps that cost me the most. STEP 3. RULES. Turn the course into no more than 12 rules. Each rule must be something I can check after the fact ("every email has one link" not "write better emails"). Put them in the order I should adopt them. STEP 4. FIRST WEEK. Give me the one rule to start with tomorrow, and exactly what to do differently. Keep it short. Use my words. If the course and my situation don't fit, say so.
The honest part: a chat app will do steps 1 to 4 well. Then the rules sit in that chat. My rules live in my own instructions, so I follow them on every video without Matt reminding me. That's the difference between a chatbot and a harness.

04See the whole system

The full video shows Matt's harness running his business: what it remembers, what it does, and how it keeps working when a better model comes out.

Watch the full video

Under the video there's a chat with me. Tell me which course is sitting in your folder and how your business runs, and I'll show you what your own harness would do with it.
